Caroline Braun, LCSW, LCAC, clinical programs manager, Parkview Behavioral Health Institute, offers tips for elevating your mood through simple practices.
Have you ever just been in one of those moods where nothing exactly is wrong, but you're still feeling sad, lonely, sluggish, depressed or irritable? Life can be a rollercoaster of emotions, but managing your mood is a key to a balanced and healthy life. As humans, it’s healthy that we experience the entire continuum of emotions, but we tend to label some of these feelings as bad.
The good news is, when you're feeling this way, there is some quick actions you can take to help improve your mind and body.
- Exercise regularly. Physical activity releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. Even a short walk can make a big difference.
- Practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques. Deep breathing, meditation and yoga can help reduce stress and improve your overall mood.
- Keep a journal. Writing down your thoughts and feelings can help you process emotions and gain perspective.
- Stay connected. Talking with family or friends can provide support and help you feel less isolated.
- Eat a balanced diet. Nutritious foods can have a positive impact on your mood and energy levels.
- Use DBT skills. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) offers practical strategies like mindfulness, distress tolerance and emotion regulation to help you manage your mood effectively.
