What is a urologist?
A urologist is a specially trained doctor who can treat diseases and conditions related to the male and female urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra) and male reproductive organs (prostate, penis, scrotum, testicles).
Why would I see a urologist?

You should see a urologist if you:

  • Have blood in your urine (hematuria)
  • Experience urinary incontinence
  • Recently had an elevated PSA test (indicator of prostate cancer)
  • Have problems associated with urination
  • Have had problems with kidney stones
  • Have had an abnormal prostate exam
  • Experience a kidney abnormality
  • Are experiencing infertility (for any reason)
  • Have a testicular mass or pain
  • Have recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI)
Do I need a referral from a family practice physician to see a urologist?
Many insurance companies do not require a referral to see a urologist. Check with your insurance company if you have any questions.

What can I expect during my first appointment?

You may have a physical to help your specialist gain a better understanding of the problems you have been experiencing. Your specialist will also ask you many questions about:

  • Your symptoms
  • Past or recent illnesses
  • Surgeries that you may have had in the past so that the specialist can better understand your needs
