Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

• When a woman isn’t expecting her menstrual period 
• After sex 
• When a women’s menstrual flow is lighter or heavier than is normal for her 
• At an unexpected time of life, such as before age 10 or after menopause 

Abnormal uterine bleeding has many causes. It’s sometimes caused by changes in hormone levels. It can also be caused by problems such as growths in the uterus or clotting problems. In some cases, the cause of the bleeding isn’t known. 

Your doctor will ask how often, how long and how much you have been bleeding. They may also ask for a record of the days you have had your period, how heavy or light the flow was, and how you felt each day. 

Your doctor may run additional tests to check for other causes of your symptoms, including: 

• A pelvic exam 
• A urine test 
• A blood test 
• An ultrasound 
• A pap smear 
• A biopsy 

It’s important to let your doctor know if you have abnormal uterine bleeding. There are many ways that treatment can help. Medicines, hormone therapy, or both may help reduce bleeding or make your menstrual periods more regular. If these don’t work, surgery may be an option.
